COURSE OVERVIEW
KAGASPA by UTMB course weaves through a series of low mountains ranging from approximately 500 to 1,400 meters in elevation. While no single peak is particularly high, the cumulative elevation gain exceeds 5,000 meters in the 100 km race, making it one of the most demanding and rewarding courses in the UTMB World Series. The route is packed with the unique natural and cultural beauty of Japan. Runners will experience panoramic ridge trails with 360-degree views, steep climbs through pristine beech forests, serene singletracks along crystal-clear streams, technical descents over roots and scree, long forest roads that test mental endurance, and solemn historical paths that evoke a sense of timelessness. It’s a landscape that runners from around the world will find unforgettable. The 100 km and 50 km races start in the heart of Yamanaka Onsen, while the 20 km race begins at Ishikawa Forest Park, about 30 minutes away by shuttle bus. The 100 km course features steep mountain trails, gentle riverside singletracks, and scenic ridgelines—an ideal setting for a true mountain running challenge. The 50 km course begins with a trail climb over one mountain, followed by a stretch of road, and finishes with a rugged mountain section, offering a dynamic and stimulating experience. The 20 km course focuses on gentle slopes and forest roads, making it beginner-friendly and perfect for those aiming to complete their first trail race. All three races finish by passing through the scenic Kakusenkei Gorge and along the charming main street of Yuge Kaido, ending at the historic Kikunoyu public bath in Yamanaka Onsen. After the race, soak in the silky waters of the onsen and let your body fully recover.
